I have never had a facial. I've wanted to, and I still want to, but in the meantime I thought that I would share what I like to think of as my "at-home facial".
This is basically what comprises a facial, if you were to go to a salon:
"A facial is a procedure involving a variety of skin treatments, including: steam, exfoliation, extraction, creams, lotions, facial masks, peels, and massage."
In order to do this at home you will need the following items:
1) Moisturizer (I like Neutrogena's oil-free daily moisturizer with SPF and UVA/UVB protection)
2) An exfoilating scrub (I like St. Ives oil-free with 2% salicylic acid gentle scrub)
3) A pot of boiling water
4) A clean small towel (must be big enough to drape over your head)
Start by washing your face with a dime-sized amount of your exfoliating scrub. Gently massage this over your face with warm to very warm water for about a minute.
Rinse and repeat (but using more of the exfoliating scrub and massage your face for only 30 seconds). Follow with a generous amount of moisturizer.
Bring a small amount of water to a boil (1 to 2 cups) . Drape the towel over your head as you lean over the pot of boiling water - be careful not to get too close to the pot, as the steam can burn!
Let the steam hit your face for about 3-4 minutes - or for slightly longer if you would prefer. You will feel the moisture gathering on your face while you do this. The steam should react with your moisturizer to deliver a more intense hydration.
If you wish, you could cleanse your face again, but using your regular cleanser (non-exfoliating wash - I like Spectrogel). Moisturize again.
If you want to add a mask in there, feel free. I would suggest doing that after you've steamed yourself. After the mask comes off, cleanse and moisturize.
A Note: I tend to stay away from masks myself, as I find that they react badly with my dry and sensitive skin.
And there you have it! That is my at-home facial!
